Why Switzerland Replaced ESR Slips with QR-Bills—and What Your Business Gains

October 10, 2026 · facturio.ch

From ESR Slips to the Swiss QR-Bill

The orange ISR (ESR) and red inpayment slips were familiar in Switzerland for decades. Their printed participant number and reference helped route payments, but the paper process relied on manually entered information and older banking workflows.

The Swiss QR-bill launched on 30 June 2020, beginning a two-year transition. Financial institutions stopped processing the old red and orange slips after 30 September 2022; since 1 October 2022, the QR-bill has been their successor for Swiss payments.

This was more than a new design. One Swiss QR code carries payment data in a standard digital format, while the payment part also prints those details as readable text. Customers can scan, verify, and pay, or use the printed information instead.

A QR-bill remains a payment part attached to an invoice, not an invoice by itself. The change harmonized payment information and made it usable in digital banking as well as at a counter or by post, without requiring every customer to go paperless.

What Customers Gain

For a private customer or a business, scanning a QR code can replace typing an IBAN, amount, and reference character by character. Fewer manual entries save time and reduce avoidable transcription errors during everyday bill payments.

The banking app displays captured details before payment, and the printed section keeps the same information visible. Customers can compare creditor, amount, and reference rather than trusting an opaque code, and can still enter a payment manually if they prefer.

QR-bills work across channels: mobile or e-banking for a digital payment, and paper at a post office or bank counter, or by payment order where offered. That choice made the transition practical for clients who do not bank by smartphone.

This flexibility matters to a Swiss SME serving customers with different ages and habits. You send one consistent document, while each recipient chooses a supported way to pay instead of needing a separate slip for each payment channel.

What Freelancers and SMEs Gain

For the issuer, a key gain is structured payment data. When an invoice uses a suitable reference, the bank’s incoming-payment report can include it, helping accounting software match a credit to the correct open invoice with less manual work.

The reference must be configured correctly: QR references are used with a QR-IBAN, while a standard IBAN uses a creditor reference or an unstructured message. Ask your bank or software provider which setup your account supports before issuing bills.

Creating each payment part from the invoice record also avoids retyping creditor and amount details in two places. Automation is only as reliable as its inputs, so check your IBAN or QR-IBAN, creditor details, currency, amount, and reference before sending.

The QR-bill does not change a service description, performance date, MWST rate, due date, or bookkeeping duty. It handles payment information; the invoice must still contain the business details and tax information that apply to your situation.

A Practical Transition Checklist

Start with your bank: confirm whether you use a QR-IBAN with a QR reference or a standard IBAN with a creditor reference. Do not invent a reference scheme or copy a number from an unrelated account or invoice.

Create a test invoice in your software. Scan its QR code with a banking app and compare every displayed field with the printed payment section and the invoice itself. Correct any mismatch before sending the document to a client.

Use software that follows the current SIX implementation guidelines, especially when generating addresses and references. Standards can be updated, so ask your provider how it handles changes and keep your own bank and creditor details current.

Once tested, use the same workflow for every invoice and reconcile incoming payments regularly. The benefit is not the QR square alone: it is clear payment data, fewer manual steps, and a more reliable route from invoice to booked receipt.
