Instant Payments and TWINT: Getting Paid Faster in Switzerland

October 15, 2026 · facturio.ch

Swiss payment traffic has changed: a client can settle your QR-bill on a Sunday evening and the money is on your account within seconds. Two rails make it possible — instant payments between bank accounts, and TWINT for consumers who pay by app. Both shorten the wait between sending an invoice and seeing the money, and both work with the QR-bills you already issue.

What instant payments actually are

Instant payments are ordinary Swiss account-to-account transfers with the waiting removed. SIX and the Swiss National Bank built the technical basis, the SIC5 platform, and since 20 August 2024 over 100 financial institutions covering more than 95 percent of Swiss customer payments can receive them.

The mechanics are simple: the payer’s account is debited and yours is credited virtually simultaneously, in less than ten seconds, around the clock, every day of the year. Once it settles, the transfer is final — you carry no credit risk on money that has arrived.

The SNB made receipt mandatory in two phases: larger banks since August 2024, the rest by the end of 2026. PostFinance includes receipt of instant payments in the basic service for companies; the sending option and any amount limits are set by each bank.

A quiet side effect: the value date equals the booking date. Money no longer spends a weekend “in transit”, so your balance and your liquidity planning stay current every day of the week.

What changes for your invoices

Nothing on the invoice itself. The QR-bill keeps its QR-IBAN and structured reference, and the speed comes from the rail underneath. When your client’s bank sends the payment as an instant payment, the amount arrives in seconds instead of the next banking day.

The QR reference travels with the payment as before, so incoming amounts still match themselves to open invoices. The difference: a payment triggered at eleven at night is booked at eleven at night.

SIX’s business case is direct access to incoming payments: better cash flow management, more automation and less settlement risk. In practice, a freelancer can pay their own bills the same day the client pays theirs.

Two checks are worth making once: confirm your bank can receive instant payments, which most now can, and ask what sending costs. Nothing else in the invoicing process needs to change.

Where TWINT fits in

TWINT is the consumer rail. Over six million people use the app, and many avoid e-banking entirely. A business offering QR-code invoices lets these customers scan the Swiss QR code with the TWINT app, confirm the amount and pay from the sofa.

One distinction matters. TWINT notifies you instantly when an invoice is paid and guarantees the payment, but the amount is typically credited to your account one to two days later. An instant notification is not instant settlement, as SIX also warns about lookalike services.

The costs are transparent. Payments accepted with the TWINT QR code sticker cost 1.3 percent of the transaction amount, with no minimum fee, no fixed fee per transaction and no recurring charges. That makes TWINT attractive precisely where card minimum fees hurt most: small consumer amounts.

As a biller issuing fewer than 10,000 invoices a month, you arrange TWINT acceptance through your billing software provider; above that volume, a direct web interface exists. TWINT’s own pitch for billers is that easy payments mean fewer reminders to send.

Putting both rails to work

For business clients, QR-bill plus instant payment is the strongest combination: high amounts, automatic reconciliation, settlement within seconds, essentially no extra cost.

For consumer clients — trades, coaching, courses, small services — adding TWINT to the QR-bill meets people where they actually pay. The invoice keeps its QR reference either way, so your bookkeeping does not fork into two systems.

Then use the speed deliberately. Tell clients on the invoice that payment lands the same day, release digital deliverables immediately on receipt, and let your own outgoing payments follow your incoming ones instead of the calendar.

facturio writes correct Swiss QR-bills with QR-IBAN and structured reference, so every invoice is ready for both rails: whether the client pays by e-banking at midnight and the money lands in seconds, or scans the code with TWINT, the payment arrives with the reference that ties it to your invoice.
