Registering With the Ausgleichskasse: AHV Sign-Up for the Self-Employed

October 14, 2026 · facturio.ch

Every self-employed person in Switzerland must register with the cantonal compensation fund, the Ausgleichskasse. It is the authority that confirms your status as a Selbstständigerwerbende and sets the AHV, IV and EO contributions you owe on your business income.

Why registration comes first

The Ausgleichskasse administers the first pillar of Swiss social insurance. Employees are registered by their employer; self-employed people must sign up themselves, whatever their income and however small the activity starts out.

Registration establishes your self-employed status. Without it you have no contribution account, no written confirmation and no complete record — and clients may hesitate, because an unclassified worker can be treated as their employee.

Contributions are due from the day your activity starts, not from the day you register. A late registration means back payments and possible default interest, so signing up early is cheaper than signing up late.

The fund also becomes a recurring counterpart of your business, like the tax office. It sets your contribution basis every year, so treat the relationship with the same care as your bookkeeping.

How the status assessment works

The Ausgleichskasse does not take your word for it. It examines whether your activity is genuinely self-employed: your own economic risk, several clients, your own infrastructure, and prices and working hours you determine yourself.

A single-client arrangement that resembles disguised employment, Scheinselbständigkeit, is usually rejected. The client then owes employer contributions — one reason clients ask for your status confirmation before signing.

Strong evidence helps: contracts or written offers, invoices issued in your own name, a short description of your activity and a realistic income forecast. Client diversity is the clearest signal of genuine self-employment.

Ask for the decision in writing and keep it. A positive status decision protects you in later audits; a negative one is better known early, while you can still adjust the setup.

The registration, step by step

Find the compensation fund of the canton where your business is based, usually the cantonal SVA or AKA. Register online through EasyGov or with the fund's form for Selbständigerwerbende.

The form asks for your personal details and your AHV number, which is on your health insurance card, plus a description of your activity, your business address and an estimate of your expected annual income.

Attach your evidence: copies of contracts or invoices, a trade-register extract if you have one, and your UID number if the business is registered. Processing usually takes a few weeks and ends with a confirmation letter.

If you are employed as well, register anyway. Contributions are assessed separately for employment income and self-employment income, and your status changes how the side activity is treated.

After registration: rates, invoices and duties

Once registered, you pay AHV, IV and EO contributions on your net income from self-employment. The rate is income-related: ten percent once income exceeds about CHF 60,500, sliding down to 5.371 percent for small incomes, as the SVA Zürich scale shows.

With an annual income of CHF 10,100 or less you pay the minimum contribution of CHF 530, so even a weak first year has a price. The AHV leaflet 2.02 sets out the current figures.

At the beginning the fund bills provisionally on your estimate. Once your accounts exist, the contributions are recalculated — keep your records tidy from the first franc so the reconciliation stays painless.
