QR-Bills for EUR Invoices: The Rules You Need to Know

September 11, 2026 · facturio

The Swiss QR-bill supports both CHF and EUR. If you invoice in euros, a few specific rules apply — and one of them changed in early 2026.

EUR QR-bill basics

A QR-bill in EUR carries the amount in euros and is paid from a euro-capable account. The debtor’s bank executes it as a SEPA transfer, so the client pays in their own currency without extra effort.

The QR-bill’s amount and currency fields are set to EUR, and the payment is processed through the SEPA system rather than the Swiss domestic clearing.

You need an account that can receive euros. A CHF-only account cannot settle a EUR QR-bill, so confirm with your bank before invoicing in euros.

The rest of the QR-bill is the same as for CHF: the same layout, the same reference types and the same scanning rules. Only the currency and the account differ.

  • Amount and currency in EUR.
  • Requires an account that can receive euros.
  • Executed as a SEPA payment.

The February 2026 change

Since February 2026, EUR QR-bills must use a standard IBAN with a creditor reference or additional information — QR-IBANs are no longer permitted for EUR invoices.

Before this change, EUR QR-bills could carry a QR-IBAN, but the rule was tightened so that euro-denominated QR-bills use an ordinary IBAN instead.

If your templates still reference a QR-IBAN for EUR invoices, update them. A EUR QR-bill with a QR-IBAN is no longer compliant and may be rejected.

The creditor reference (RF…) on a standard IBAN is the expected reference type for EUR QR-bills, giving you automatic matching without the QR-IBAN structure.

Avoiding exchange-rate surprises

When you invoice in EUR, the amount your business actually receives in CHF depends on the exchange rate at conversion. Factor that into your pricing if your costs are in francs.

State the currency clearly as EUR on the invoice and the QR-bill. Mixing CHF and EUR on one document makes the payment ambiguous and can cause a rejection.

If you hold a euro account, the payment can stay in euros and be converted later on your terms. If it lands in a CHF account, the bank converts it at its own rate.

Use a consistent exchange rate for your books, such as the Federal Tax Administration’s monthly rate, so your CHF accounting of the EUR invoice is defensible.

What to check before sending

Verify your euro account’s IBAN and make sure your invoicing software produces the EUR QR-bill with a standard IBAN, not a QR-IBAN.

Confirm the reference on the EUR QR-bill is a valid creditor reference, so the payment still reconciles automatically when it arrives.

Test the QR-bill by scanning it before sending. A wrong IBAN or a stale QR-IBAN on a EUR invoice is exactly the kind of error that fails at payment time.

facturio handles this automatically for EUR invoices, generating the QR-bill with a standard IBAN and the correct reference so you do not have to remember the 2026 rule.

  • EUR QR-bills use a standard IBAN since February 2026.
  • Use a creditor reference for automatic matching.
  • Keep the currency as EUR throughout the invoice.
  • Scan-test before sending a EUR QR-bill.
